If you’ve received packages in the mail larger than books, you have probably seen these, but you may not know they have at least one interesting property.
Cornstarch packing peanuts don’t have the traditional “S” shape the styrofoam ones do—they are instead shaped as (often bent) cylinders. I have heard they are edible (though I wouldn’t suggest you try this; there may be some that are not healthy to eat— and they don’t really taste good, either), but one day when I was playing around with a few, I started thinking about Bill’s rasins and 7-Up experiment, got curious, and asked myself this question:
What would happen if I dropped one of these cornstarch packing peanuts in water?
So get yourself a small glass, fill it with water, and then drop in one peanut. Use both your ears and eyes to observe what happens, and see if you can explain what is happening.
