Amador County District Attorney Todd Riebe said Friday that he has asked State of California officials to investigate whether county employees may have unlawfully dug up and stored underground storage tanks.

"I mad an official request to have the California Department of Toxic Substances Control and the California Highway Patrol's office to initiate an investigation of the matter and report back their findings," Riebe said.

The District Attorney was notified late this week by the county's Department of Environmental Health that county employees may not have had a permit to dig up and store on county property underground storage tanks that may have been used for storing hazardous materials.

"This matter requires immediate investigation," Riebe said. "My office does not have the necessary resources to conduct such an investigation, however, we will participate in the fact-finding mission."

The Ledger Dispatch obtained this information Friday, just minutes before the D.A.'s Office closed and was unable to determine the exact locations under investigation.
