In response to Rick Paul's arrestDear Editor, For grins and giggles, on Thur. Feb 18, 1999, I decided to listen to Mr. Rutter's poor attempt at humor. He calls it scrambled eggs, but it sounds more like sour grapes. This seems to be his private forum to trash the Amador Ledger and Marilyn Lewis. One of Thursdays topics was the coverage of an arrest Mr. Rutter claims has nothing to do with Gastankgate and the Womack ordeal. I beg to differ. Is it coincidence when Rick Paul called Mr. Israel's office on Feb. 5, 1999 to request the file regarding the pump lockdown at the airport he was asked his full legal name and spelling by Marge. Since when do you have to give your name at all when requesting public documents? Is it coincidence that on Feb. 5, 1999, two days after Rick's initial visit to Mr. Israel's office to initiate this request, that a warrant entered the system on a complaint dating back to 1992. Coincidence, that complaint was purged from Rick's file in 1995, and only after repeated pressure from Mr. Riebe (confirmed by the Tuolumne County District Attorney) that complaint was resurrected so an arrest could be made, and Rick silenced. Does it still appear that these two events are unrelated. Mr. Rutter, maybe you should practice what you preach and check out the credibility of YOUR sources before you subject your listeners to you obviously (unbiased) opinions. If the Amador Ledger had not printed a story about Rick's arrest, would they have been accused of trying to cover it up. It seems to me they would have been criticized no matter what they did. Rick Paul's arrest was nothing more than another attempt to strengthen the DA's already weak case. It shows how low they will stoop to intimidate and discredit any citizen who dares to speak out against them. Rick Paul is my fiancé and best friend. He spoke out because he believes in the process, and that our government should work for us, not against us. I for one, am very proud of him. I personally want to thank Marilyn Lewis for her voice in this matter and for being there for me during a difficult two days. I want to thank the staff of the Amador Ledger, especially Diane Smith and Sharon Taylor, for printing the truth regarding this matter and not deserting Rick when the fire got hot. I also want to thank whomever I talked to at the Sheriff's department for being so kind to me when I was trying to found out about Rick's arrest. If this were not happening to my family and me, I would not believe it could happen in this country. Wake up Amador County, it's time we hold our public officials accountable for what they do to us.
