Riebe admits D.A.'s office involved in Paul's arrest

JACKSON—Two days after issuing a news release denying the involvement of his office in the arrest of Pine Grove resident and "gastankgate" critic Rick Paul, Amador County District Attorney Todd Riebe admitted a member of his staff initiated the action.

His admission followed yesterday's announcement by Tuolumne County District Attorney Nina Deane that she has asked the Tuolumne County Municipal Court to withdraw the arrest warrant against Paul.

Deane said a member of Riebe's staff called a member of her staff and asked that the 1992 bench warrant for Paul which was later purged in 1995, be reinstated.

Paul was arrested on Feb. 16 when he appeared at the Amador County Administration Building to request documents under the Freedom of Information Act. On Feb. 19 the Amador Ledger Dispatch ran a story detailing the involvement of the District Attorney's Office in Paul's arrest which Riebe vehemently denied in a news release issued Tuesday. The Amador Ledger Dispatch printed excerpts from Riebe's news release on Wednesday along with statements by Amador Ledger Dispatch Editor Sharon Taylor in which she held her ground insisting her original article on the D.A.'s involvement was correct.

Yesterday Riebe said the involvement of his office was "open to interpretation."

Paul, in an interview yesterday afternoon, said Deane had called him personally to inform him she was requesting the case against him be dismissed and that the $5,000 bail money would be returned to him. According to Paul, Deane told him, "This thing got out of control and I apologize for your personal inconvenience."
